How to Safely Free Up Storage Space on Your Computer
Find large files, clear temporary data, uninstall unused software, and avoid deleting important system files.
Low storage can slow updates, interrupt downloads, and make everyday work frustrating. Freeing space is safest when you start with files you understand.
Check what is actually using space
Use the storage overview built into your operating system. It can separate apps, documents, photos, temporary files, and other categories so you know where to focus.
Review Downloads
Downloads often contain duplicate installers, old archives, exported files, and large videos. Sort by size and date, then inspect before deleting.
Uninstall unused applications
Use the operating system’s normal uninstall process rather than deleting program folders manually.
Clear supported temporary-file categories
Built-in cleanup tools can identify caches and temporary data. Read each category before confirming deletion, especially anything related to previous installations or user files.
Move large personal media intentionally
Photos and videos can be moved to external or cloud storage, but verify the new copy before deleting the original.
Do not delete unknown system files
Randomly removing folders from system directories can break applications or the operating system. If a category is unfamiliar, investigate it first.
Keep a buffer
Do not wait until the drive is completely full. Leaving working space makes updates and temporary operations easier.
Storage cleanup should be conservative: measure first, remove known clutter, verify backups, and avoid aggressive cleaner tools that promise dramatic results.
